What I learned about Marshalls Island Stick Charts: 1. They were used to navigate the Pacific Ocean by Canoe! 2. The charts represented major #ocean swell patterns 3. They were made of the middle 'rib' of a coconut frond 🥥 4. The Marshallese recognized four main ocean swells, known as the rilib, kaelib, bungdockerik and bundockeing. 5. Individual charts varied so much in form/interpretation that the person who made the #chart was the only one who could use it! #educational #education #cartography #map #history
